Hail Damage Claims
From pea-sized pellets to baseball-sized hailstones, hail can occur in the warmest of climates and cause major damage to your property. How can it hail when it’s warm outside? During a thunderstorm, strong currents of rising air, also known as updrafts, push the rainwater high enough in the atmosphere for it to freeze. As those frozen droplets fall back down to earth, they can grow by other droplets sticking, and freezing, to them, resulting in damaging hail.
What to Do After a Hail Storm
Whenever it hails, record the date and time it began and ended, and keep that information where you can access it easily. When the storm is over, take a photo of a piece of the damage-causing hail. It’s helpful to use a coin or even ruler or measuring tape to provide context for the size of the hailstones. Inspect your home for the following:
- Damage to outside appliances, such as your air conditioning unit
- Leaks inside your house
- Broken windows
- Roof damage
- Damage to your vehicle
It is always helpful to take photos of any damage your property encounters. Review your policy’s coverage, and report any property damage for items that are covered. Most auto insurance companies set a 30-day goal, while home insurance companies can take around 60 days to settle – but you should not be kept waiting for months on end. If you find yourself in that situation, call a Mission Public Adjustor to get your claims settled once and for all.
