Flood Damage Claims
Flooding can and does occur anywhere and everywhere in the world, but it is more likely to occur in urban areas due to more impermeable surfaces and deforestation. The Texas Hill Country is also one of the most flash flood prone areas in the country. Whether it’s from a busted pipe or a heavy storm, your things are at risk when your home floods. The first thing you need to know is if your insurance policy covers flood damage. Most standard homeowners and renters insurance policies do not include flood damage, but that coverage can be added to most policies by the homeowner or renter for an additional expense.
I have flood insurance. Now what?
The first thing you need to do after your home experiences flood damage is to file a claim with your insurance provider. You may also want to call an emergency restoration company to dry out the area to prevent further loss and mold growth. Next, an insurance adjuster will be sent to your home to assess the damage. You should do a few things before the adjuster arrives:
- Clear items away from the damaged area
- Keep damaged items/materials as proof of loss
- If you will not be present when the adjuster arrives, ensure they have a phone number where they can reach you at
Insurance usually has about 15 days after you’ve filed a claim to send out an adjuster to assess the damage. After the adjuster performs the assessment, you may choose to get estimates on repairs from contractors. You should be contacted within 30 days by your provider if they have agreed to cover some or all of the repairs.
